Clare Healy, Looptworks

We're drawn to those who do things a bit differently: brands and people that challenge the norm in ways both big and small, put people ahead of profits, or simply want to try something new.

In our new IG Live series on @boldbrewteam, Out of Ordinary, we hope to amplify the voices of those doing just that. We'll be sharing stories of people and things that catalyze our communities.

We've had some Out of Ordinary things in the works for a while, but with COVID-19 affecting us all, we took the last month to re-work how Out of Ordinary makes sense for us all right now, and as the world evolves indefinitely.

So, we'd like to invite you to join our co-founder Amanda Goad this Friday May 8th, MT, for our inaugural OOO.

We are thrilled to be talking to Clare Healy, the Marketing Director at Looptworks (@looptworks).

Based in Portland, OR, Looptworks re-purposes and upcycles abandoned, pre-consumer and post-consumer materials into limited edition products. They also work directly with companies around the world to repurpose their excess materials and waste. In March, Looptworks shifted their production to make PPE out of pre-consumer excess materials.

With a background at Ogilvy & Mather, VaynerMedia and System1, Clare will be talking to us about her personal growth; the differences between upcycling, downcycling, and recycling; the process of becoming a B Corp; pivoting to making PPE and more.

We asked Clare a few questions ahead of time for a little sneak peek at our upcoming IG Live session.

LOOPTWORKS

Your favorite Looptworks product?

Right now, this commuter grocery tote upcycled from retired kiteboarding kites. Super durable, lightweight, and every one we have is unique in style.

One tip for upcycling:

Seems simple, but whether you're a consumer or a manufacturer, make a habit of looking at the value of your products and their parts. I think we label items as waste far too often when, in actuality, they could have a second, third, or fourth life for us or someone else.

How do you work on reducing your footprint? How could someone else?

For me, awareness is key. It can be so easy to fly, drive, shop online, purchase your regular items from a grocery store, etc. and not think twice about what those actions actually mean. However, once you start understanding the resources and impact involved with each of those, I think you realize the power you hold with everything you do.

Logistically speaking, start small. Measuring carbon footprint with some of the apps or online calculators available, for me, was a super digestible place to start.

Oh, also... one more thing. Demand more from the brands you love. It goes a long way.

Made You Think:

Zion National Park Forever Film (which Project16x Alum Shandi Kano helped produce). For me, this especially stuck because I think many of us can have a habit of judging how people enjoy the outdoors. This film was a firm reminder to check that habit because there are endless "right" ways to experience and take in our parks and public lands.

Made You Laugh:

Very personal, but the fact that my older brother used some (k, probably too much) of his quarantine time to make a fake Mentos commercial with footage of my nephew learning to walk. https://www.instagram.com/p/B_yBVMoFQv6/

Made You Dance:

100% this new tune from the band Khruangbin. It's in the daily rotation about 13 times a day at this point ;)

Made You Create:

The #OurGreatIndoors series floating around Instagram consistently gives me the urge to drop everything and start crafting with everything around our house. Talk about a constant reminder to take a closer look at seemingly trivial items around you. https://www.instagram.com/erinoutdoors/?hl=en
